I have been thinking a lot lately about motherhood and how blessed I am. One morning last week I woke up to Simon in the pantry at 6:30 in the morning. I thought they weren't supposed to eat me out of house and home until they were teenagers. As I was doing the dishes later that day this story, of sorts, came to my mind. I thought I would share. I named it motherhood, and YES, all this stuff really has happened.
Motherhood
Some day I will not find:
My boys in the pantry at 6:30 in the morning,
Lego’s in my kitchen tool caddy,
Cherries that have been picked off the tree next door in my shoes,
Fleece hats in the pantry,
Towel’s on the floor that were used to mop up spilled juice,
Toys strung about the front room floor,
Shirts stretched out and pants with holes in them,
Dirty Pullup’s on the floor that have conveniently missed the garbage can,
Shoe’s in the refrigerator,
Paper airplanes, balloons and pillows flying at me and hitting me in the head,
Rocks, toy cars, marbles, and other random objects rolling around in the dryer,
Apple cores or banana peels left on the table,
Elbows, knees, fingers and toes poking me in MY bed in the middle of the night,
And muddy footprints on my newly cleaned carpets.
And although I look forward to that day with rejoicing, it also brings me sadness because then it will mean that I will no longer have:
Good morning hugs and slobbery kisses,
Pictures drawn just for me,
Boys dressed up in creative costumes that make me smile,
Wilted dandelions brought to me to put in my hair so I can “look pretty”,
Little hands rubbing my back or brushing my hair,
The sound of little boy laughter,
Babies to snuggle with after a bath,
Little voices singing songs with me on car rides,
Boys to hold on my lap while reading a book,
Dirty hands and faces to wash,
Cute little under-roo bottoms running around the house,
Ships built of Lego’s and weapons built of Tinkertoy’s to be shown to me,
Eskimo and butterfly kisses,
Forts made in the family room,
And my sweet little boys faces smiling up at me.
I think I will take the good with the bad for as long as I can.
